The prevailing summer northerly makes southbound passages fast and northbound passages slow and wet. Direction of travel changes the realistic passage time more than distance does.
Atlantic swell
This is ocean coastline. Swell can make some harbour entrances unworkable even in moderate wind, so entry points are chosen on the swell forecast, not just the wind.
Limited bolt-holes
Shelter is spaced out along parts of the coast, so legs are planned between ports that stay accessible if conditions build.
Season
The coast is workable across much of the year, with winter passages planned around Atlantic depression tracks and held when the window is not there.
