Superyacht Delivery: What Makes It Different?

What Makes Superyacht Delivery Different?

Superyacht delivery — broadly defined as vessels over 24 metres or 80 feet — sits in a different operational category from standard yacht transport. The stakes are higher, the logistics more complex, and the regulatory environment more demanding. Here's what owners, management companies, and brokers need to understand.

Crew Requirements and Certification

The crew requirements for superyacht delivery scale significantly:

  • Master qualification: Vessels over 24m require an MCA Master 200GT or higher as a minimum. For vessels over 500GT, an MCA Master 500GT or OOW 3000GT is required
  • Crew numbers: Larger vessels need more crew — typically a minimum of three for a 30m vessel, and four or five for vessels over 40m
  • STCW certification: Full STCW certification is mandatory for all crew, including Basic Safety Training, Proficiency in Survival Craft, and Advanced Fire Fighting
  • ENG1 medical certificates: Valid medical fitness certificates for all crew members

Flag State and Regulatory Compliance

Superyachts are subject to flag state regulations that don't typically apply to smaller vessels:

  • ISM Code compliance: Many superyachts operate under the International Safety Management Code, which requires documented safety management systems
  • ISPS Code: International Ship and Port Facility Security Code may apply for certain vessels and port calls
  • Large Yacht Code (LY3/REG): Red Ensign Group vessels must comply with the Large Commercial Yacht Code
  • Manning certificates: Some flag states require specific manning certificates for delivery voyages

Port Logistics

Superyacht port calls are more complex than berthing a 40ft sailing yacht:

  • Berth availability: Not every marina can accommodate a 35m+ vessel. Draft, beam, and air draft restrictions all factor in
  • Port agency: Larger vessels often require a port agent for customs clearance, immigration, and berth coordination
  • Pilotage: Some ports require pilotage for vessels over certain dimensions
  • Fuel logistics: Fuelling a superyacht may require truck delivery or specific fuelling berths

Technical Systems Management

Superyachts have complex onboard systems that require active management during delivery:

  • Generator management: Load balancing, fuel transfer between tanks, and generator cycling
  • Stabiliser systems: Ensuring gyro or fin stabilisers are operational and properly configured for passage mode
  • Watermaker operation: Running the watermaker to maintain fresh water production
  • Climate control: Managing air conditioning and heating systems to prevent moisture damage
  • Security systems: CCTV, alarm systems, and access control

Insurance Considerations

Insurance for superyacht delivery carries additional requirements:

  • Higher hull values mean skipper third-party liability cover must match — typically €5M minimum for vessels valued over €2M
  • Crew liability: Employers' liability and P&I cover may be required depending on the vessel's commercial or private status
  • Named skipper approval: Some underwriters require named skipper approval with CV and qualification review before agreeing to cover the delivery

Why Specialist Experience Matters

The difference between delivering a 45ft sailing yacht and a 35m motor yacht isn't just scale — it's operational complexity. A delivery skipper moving a superyacht needs:

  • Experience with vessel systems specific to larger yachts (hydraulic passerelles, tender garages, integrated bridge systems)
  • Understanding of commercial maritime regulations
  • Ability to manage larger crew teams
  • Relationships with port agents and marina operators across the delivery route
  • Familiarity with the specific yard or builder if it's a new-build delivery

At Yacht.Delivery, our superyacht deliveries are managed by masters with MCA 200GT or 500GT certificates and direct experience with vessels in the 24-50m range. Every delivery includes full passage planning, regulatory compliance checks, and port logistics coordination.
