Sailing Yacht Delivery vs Motor Yacht: What's Different?
Sailing Yacht vs Motor Yacht Delivery
While the fundamentals of professional yacht delivery are the same, there are meaningful differences between delivering a sailing yacht and a motor yacht. Understanding these helps set realistic expectations for timing, cost, and crew requirements.
Passage Speed and Duration
The most obvious difference is speed. A motor yacht cruising at 10-15 knots will complete a 500nm passage in 2-3 days. A sailing yacht averaging 6-7 knots may take 4-5 days for the same route. This directly affects crew costs and provisioning requirements.
However, sailing yachts have the advantage of lower fuel costs and greater range, making them well-suited to longer ocean passages where fuel availability may be limited.
Crew Skills and Qualifications
Both types require skippers with MCA Master 200GT or RYA Yachtmaster certificates, but the practical skills differ:
- Sailing yachts: Crew need experience with sail handling, rigging systems, and sailing in varied wind conditions. Knowledge of the specific rig type (sloop, ketch, cutter) is important
- Motor yachts: Crew need strong engine management skills, understanding of fuel systems, and experience with stabiliser and thruster systems
Weather Routing Differences
Weather affects each type differently:
- Sailing yachts can use wind to their advantage but may need to wait for suitable wind angles. Upwind passages are slower and less comfortable
- Motor yachts are less affected by wind direction but more vulnerable to sea state. Head seas at speed can be uncomfortable and increase fuel consumption significantly
Fuel and Expenses
Motor yacht deliveries typically have higher fuel costs — a 60ft motor yacht burning 40-60 litres per hour over a multi-day passage adds up quickly. Sailing yachts use significantly less fuel, though they may require longer crew days due to slower passage speeds.
Pre-Departure Considerations
Each type has specific pre-departure checks:
- Sailing yachts: Rig inspection, running rigging condition, sail inventory, autopilot calibration for sailing modes
- Motor yachts: Engine service records, fuel quality and quantity, generator systems, stabiliser function
Which Costs More?
It depends on the route. For short coastal passages, motor yacht deliveries are often more cost-effective because faster passage times offset higher fuel costs. For longer passages, sailing yachts may be more economical overall despite longer crew days.
